A note from Pastor Don…
Don Henley of “The Eagles” fame wrote in his famous love song, “Heart of the Matter”… “All the things I thought I figured out, I have to learn again. I’ve been trying to get down to the heart of the matter.”
When questioned as to the things that are of prime importance, Jesus quickly responded: “Love God and love others.” You don’t have to live a very complicated life to be well aware of the challenge we all face in keeping first things first. I recall hearing pastor, author and leadership expert, Bill Hybels, speak of his frustration in realizing that after all of his years of trying to get it right, he was still devoting a huge percentage of his time just trying to manage himself. Separating the urgent from the important, learning to sort out all the competing voices calling for your attention, and trying to order your life around a way of living that doesn’t lead to regret is indeed a full time pursuit.
Sure, there are always those who plunge ahead in life with a reckless abandon and a “joie de vivre ” that seems appealing, but when it comes to your one and only life, you want to get it right. If “Carpe Diem” means anything, it implies doing the right thing at the right time.
We want to do that as a church as well. With fads, and opinions, preference and protocol all driving the agenda in their own way, staying focused as a community of faith is urgent. This month, our Sunday AM series… “CRUX”, will get us all thinking about what lies at the heart of the matter. Our core values serve as guardrails in helping remind us of the things most worthy of our remembrance as we worship and serve together as a church family. The neat thing is we will find that some things are not only of prime value for our ministry together, but for our individual lives too.
Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ ” Matt. 22:37-39 NIV
